Moldova’s fragile democracy is under threat. A common effort is required in preserving and advancing it.
Protests began in the capital of Moldova on Monday, April 6, with 5,000 people gathering peacefully to contest the results of the Sunday election in which the Communist Party won a majority of votes amid allegations of foulplay. On the morning of Tuesday April 7th the protest grew to 10,000 people and some of the protesters engaged in acts of violence, attacking the Presidential building, Parliament, and policemen. We do not condone the acts of violence, nor do we believe they representative of the intentions of the majority of the protesters. Peaceful protests have continued Wednesday and Thursday.
What we are seeing are Moldovans defending fundamental values that the current communist government is striving to infringe upon:
- Right to free speech
- Right to assembly
- Freedom of the press
As announced on Thursday, the Romanian Club at Columbia University is organizing a rally in support of the Moldovan cause. We invite you all to join us on Sunday, April 12th, at 11:30am in front of the United Nations headquarters, 3 United Nations Plaza New York, NY 10017.
This rally will raise awareness about the recent events in Moldova, expose government excesses, advocate for an appropriate response, and express solidarity with the peaceful protesters.
We encourage all Columbia students who wish to participate to meet us at 10:30am at the sundial on Columbia’s campus. We will then head over to the UN.
Similar actions were undertaken on Friday by student associations in Boston and Washington DC. We hope you will come out and offer us your support. Please do not hesitate to contact us if you wish to help organize the event.
